The owners of this 40-year-old home have cut their energy bills by about two-thirds through their improvements. Their 3.8kW photovoltaic solar array provides more electricity than they use on sunny days, and a solar thermal system provides hot water. An extensive energy-saving retrofit loaded the home with energy-saving features such as a high-efficiency boiler and high performance windows. Zoned baseboard heating with four thermostats can be controlled with a cell phone app. An induction cooktop and heat pump dryer allow the solar energy generated at the home to displace natural gas use. The home also has numerous water-saving features and uses sustainable materials for floors and cabinets.
